Bluetooth technology gives you more options for hands-free cell phone use.

By Helen Thompson, Oct. 2005

If you’re standing in line behind a person with what looks to be a bionic hearing aid attached to the side of his skull, don’t worry: The robot invasion is still the stuff of science-fiction lore.

This hands-free device is the newest rage among cell phone users, and it uses something called Bluetooth technology to create a wireless connection between a fancy-looking headset and your cell phone. With this headset, you’re no longer wrestling with uncomfortable earbuds or dealing with bad speakerphone connections. And if you work or are traveling in a state or locality that has banned using hand-held phones while driving, these devices make it easy to stay in touch on the road.

Look ma, no wires!
Many electronic communications devices are Bluetooth-compatible, from PDAs to wearable keyboards that fit on your forearm. But for these devices to talk to each other, they must have the technology. So to use a Bluetooth headset, you need a Bluetooth-enabled phone or computer with phone technology within 30 feet. Still, that’s a lot of flexibility—keep your phone in your briefcase or handbag, rather than dig and fumble. And many of these headsets have their own LCD display for caller-ID and other options. Some manufacturers offer adapters that plug into your non-Bluetooth phone’s headphone jack, allowing you to use the technology with your existing phone. Just make sure that’s the most cost-effective way to upgrade to this technology.

If security is your concern, Bluetooth uses audio protocols that make it virtually impossible for other people to listen in to your conversations.

You can choose from a number of different styles. Some headsets have extendable “boom mikes,” but many don’t extend past your temple. You’ll want to consider three things when shopping for a headset: a comfortable fit, good sound quality and the right look. And since you’re also probably interested in the bottom line, be sure to shop around: Prices can vary wildly from the manufacturer’s retail price, depending on who’s running the best sale. And, if you need to upgrade your phone, too, you may be able to get a good bundled package.
